wisdom tooth extraction

Wisdom tooth extraction, also known as removal, is a surgical procedure performed to remove one or more wisdom teeth. These are the four permanent adult teeth located at the back corners of your mouth on the top and bottom.

When a wisdom tooth, also called a third molar, does not have enough space to grow properly, it can become impacted. An impacted wisdom tooth can lead to pain, infection, or other dental issues, necessitating its removal by a dentist or an oral surgeon. In some cases, even if impacted wisdom teeth are not causing immediate problems, dentists and oral surgeons may recommend their removal to prevent potential problems later in life.

Why it's done

Wisdom teeth are typically the last permanent teeth to emerge in the mouth, usually erupting between the ages of 17 and 25. They may come through partially or not at all, with some individuals never experiencing the eruption of their wisdom teeth. While for some people, wisdom teeth emerge without causing issues, many others have impacted wisdom teeth due to insufficient space in the mouth.

Impacted wisdom teeth can manifest in various ways:

  • They may grow at an angle toward the adjacent tooth, the second molar.
  • They might angle towards the back of the mouth.
  • They could develop at a right angle to the other teeth, appearing as if the wisdom tooth is "lying down" within the jawbone.
  • Alternatively, they may grow straight up or down like other teeth but remain trapped within the jawbone.

Problems with impacted wisdom teeth

Impacted wisdom teeth may necessitate removal if they result in:

  • Pain.
  • Food and debris getting trapped behind the wisdom tooth.
  • Infection or gum disease (periodontal disease).
  • Tooth decay in a partially erupted wisdom tooth.
  • Damage to nearby teeth or the surrounding bone.
  • Formation of a fluid-filled sac (cyst) around the wisdom tooth.
  • Complications with orthodontic braces used to straighten other teeth.
