What Is IPL Treatment?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, commonly referred to as a photofacial, offers a non-surgical approach to enhance skin color and texture. It addresses visible damage from sun exposure, known as photoaging, often noticeable on areas like the face, neck, hands, or chest.

IPL treatment is beneficial for individuals with redness, brown spots, or uneven skin tone resulting from various health conditions.

IPL vs. laser

IPL and laser treatments both target a range of skin concerns, but they differ in their intensity and approach. IPL is typically milder on the skin, necessitating more sessions for similar outcomes compared to laser therapy. Laser treatments are more intense and require longer recovery periods, but they may achieve more noticeable results with fewer sessions.

Unlike lasers, IPL devices emit multiple wavelengths of pulsating light, allowing them to address various skin conditions simultaneously. Your dermatologist can assess which method—IPL or laser—is better suited to your specific skin needs and desired outcomes.

How IPL Treatment Works?

IPL utilizes light energy to target specific colors in your skin.

By heating the skin, IPL prompts your body to eliminate unwanted cells, addressing the skin issue being treated. It can simultaneously address various skin conditions.

Following IPL treatment, you may notice a more youthful appearance due to improved skin tone. Additionally, as IPL doesn't harm surrounding tissues, recovery tends to be faster.

What Does IPL Treat?

For optimal results, IPL is most effective on pale or light brown skin tones. Consult your dermatologist if you seek to diminish or eliminate:

  • Acne
  • Birthmarks
  • Stretch marks
  • Liver or age spots
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Brown spots (liver or age spots)
  • Dark spots due to hormonal changes
  • Discolored skin
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Freckles
  • Redness from rosacea
  • Scars
  • Spider veins
  • Unwanted hair

Who Shouldn’t Get IPL Treatment?

Before proceeding with IPL treatment, it's important to consult your doctor if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have a pre-existing skin condition
  • Currently have a sunburn
  • Take medications for other conditions, such as blood thinners or isotretinoin (Accutane) for acne

IPL treatment may not be suitable if you:

  • Have light sensitivity
  • Recently tanned your skin via sunlight, tanning beds, or creams
  • Have potential skin cancer concerns
  • Use retinoid creams
  • Have very dark skin tones
  • Experience skin resurfacing disorders
  • Have severe scarring or keloid scar tissue

On the day of your appointment, refrain from using perfumes, makeup, and scented products that may irritate your skin.

Does IPL cause cancer?

Studies indicate that IPL is safe and does not lead to cancer. With over 30 years of usage, IPL has not been associated with any increased risk of skin cancer or other types of cancer.

Does IPL Work?

The effectiveness of IPL treatment can vary depending on the specific concerns you want to address:

  • Redness: IPL can eliminate 50%-75% of broken blood vessels in one to three sessions, with the potential for complete removal. While treated veins do not typically return, new ones may appear over time.
  • Sun damage: IPL can reduce brown spots and redness caused by UV rays by up to 70%.
  • Hair removal: IPL is most effective for light skin and dark hair, but may not work well for dark skin or blond hair.
  • Dry eyes: IPL can provide a 25%-50% reduction or more in symptoms of dry eyes, especially if other treatments have not been successful.
  • Acne: IPL can significantly reduce acne symptoms and scarring, with over 90% of individuals experiencing positive results. Multiple sessions may be needed for noticeable improvements.
  • Rosacea: IPL is a good alternative to laser therapy for rosacea-related flushing, especially for individuals under 40 with moderate to severe conditions.

Side Effects of IPL Treatment:-

IPL treatment, when administered by a skilled technician, is generally safe. However, it may trigger flare-ups of hormonal brown spots and lead to other potential side effects. These include:

  • Scarring
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Changes in skin color
  • Crusting
  • Blistering

Side effects of IPL hair removal:-

IPL hair removal can lead to temporary side effects, such as:

  • Increased skin sensitivity
  • Mild discomfort like stinging or sunburn sensation
  • Slight skin discoloration, often manifesting as redness
  • Rare instances of skin infection
  • Occasional blistering or scarring, especially in individuals with sensitive skin.

IPL Recovery

After IPL treatment, you may experience sunburn-like sensations for about 4-6 hours, which can be eased with ice packs or a cool washcloth.

Redness or bruising on your skin may last for a day or two. Brown spots might temporarily darken but typically peel off within a few weeks.

During the healing period:

  • Avoid makeup if your skin is tender.
  • Apply moisturizing lotion.
  • Use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and zinc as a physical blocker, reapplying every 2 hours.
  • Wash your face with a gentle cleanser for sensitive skin.
  • Your dermatologist will advise when it's safe to resume your regular skincare routine, usually within a week./li>

Typically, 3 to 7 sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart are recommended, depending on the targeted condition. It may take several weeks to observe noticeable changes in your skin.
